Brazil is South America's most populous nation and is home to about 200 million people, making it the 5th most populated nation in the world, and the largest in South America.  Of this population an estimated 70% of them claim Roman Catholicism as their religion.  Brazil was under Portuguese rule for over 300 years and as a result the official language is Portuguese, which surprises some who expect it to be Spanish, as it is in most other South American countries.

Although a secular nation, the Catholic faith is deeply embedded in many institutions.  With this background, you will find many sites of interest in the country.
