About Saint Jude:
St. Jude, known as Thaddaeus, was a brother of St. James the Less, and a relative of Jesus as one of the twelve apostles. He preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Lybia. According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62, and assisted at the election of his brother, Saint Simeon, as Bishop of Jerusalem.
He is often invoked in prayer as “Saint of Hopeless Causes” , along with Saint Rita, and known for his powerful intercession. Saint Jude in (Latin, “Judas”) is a saint who was not always remembered in history due to the fact that his name was similar to that of Jesus’ betrayer, Judas Iscariot.
About the National Shrine of Saint Jude:
The Shrine was founded under the direction of Father James Tort (C.M.F). It was born in the desperate financial times of the Great Depression, when most members of his parish (Our Lady of Guadalupe) were out of work. Yet he asked the intercession of Saint Jude and the impossible became a reality in 1929, when the first Mass was celebrated .
The National Shrine of Saint Jude was founded on its present site by a Claretian missionary, the late Father James Tort, C.M.F., pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
They invite you to send your prayer intentions as well as your testimonies as to the power of prayer.
Saint Jude is often considered the patron saint of impossible causes…….and it was one such story that inspired an unknown…and broke….comedian, named Amos Jacobs, to ask for his intercession. Of course in later years, we knew him by his stage name of Danny Thomas and are aware of his great work with Saint Jude’s hospital. For more about his story click here.
The shrine offers Novenas to Saint Jude five times a year. They invite you to join the St. Jude League, a community that prays with, and for, one another.
